I lived in Paris from 1979 to 1986. When friends going there ask, "Is there any place you can recommend?", the following is what I used to tell them. This certainly isn't everything - you'll still need your guidebooks -, just what comes to mind from my seven years there.

UPDATE 2008: This part of the site had not been seriously updated since it was created in the late Nineties; I spent part of a late 2008 trip back to Paris checking some of this information, and have noted the resulting updates on the pages.
